Exploding Kittens’ Senior Game Designer Carol Mertz discusses inventors, creativity and designing for the mass market.

Each puzzle features artwork by the Oatmeal and Exploding Kittens’ creative team, and comes with a poster.

As the firm ramps up its global inventor outreach, we spoke with Zach Schiff-Abrams – Head of Creative Development at Exploding Kittens – about the recent Happy Salmon acquisition, and what the team are looking for from inventors.

The company will be reimagining Happy Salmon with an Exploding-Kittens twist and re-releasing the game this November.

“We’re looking for games that deliver exciting and memorable gameplay, yet are simple to explain to our customers,” said Exploding Kittens’ Thor Ritz.

Happy Salmon, Dungeon of Fortune and Monster Match co-inventor, Ken Gruhl, on ideation, working with others and not loving a mind map.

“This role is a great departure from freelance for me to learn the inner workings of a publisher which understands great hooks and gameplay,” said Gruhl.

“A Little Wordy combines the best of Scrabble and Clue into a portable game that only takes a few minutes to set up and get going,” said Exploding Kittens’ Matthew Inman.
